Doula Services

Postpartum Support

Having a baby is a roller coaster of highs, lows, excitement, confusion and many new emotions and questions. This is something many new mothers are totally unprepared for. Additionally, in Canberra many families are far from relatives and traditional support structures, which makes this time even more difficult and isolating. Having birthed both of my girls far from my support system (one in Australia and the other in Thailand), I know what it’s like to need someone to mother you and I can do just that. As a postpartum doula, I will tailor my work to assist you with what you need on that given day, in that moment. Common requests include:

  • Wearing or holding your baby so you can have time to yourself… sleep, go for a walk, shower, etc.

  • Help and advice with breastfeeding, bathing, or settling techniques

  • Preparing a home-cooked meal or picking up groceries

  • Laundry or light housekeeping

  • Sharing a cup of tea and a listening ear

$75 per hour, minimum 3 hours, in your home

Birth Mapping

The only predictable thing about birth is that it’s totally unpredictable…but that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare for the various pathways it may take! Having trained with Catherine Bell, author of “The Birth Map: boldly going where no birth plan has gone before”, I can help you navigate your chosen and unexpected birth pathways. We will work together to consider all of your options and choices when it comes to birth. You will be able to gather information and have help with your decision-making. This will help you create a detailed Birth Map with all of your informed decisions. I firmly believe that when women are informed and involved in the decision-making process, it leads to an overall more positive birth experience.

  • Two sessions (about 2 hours long) of birth mapping support and guidance

  • Unbiased, evidence-based information about all of your birthing options and answers to all of your questions

Labour and Birth Support

This option includes several meetings to plan and prepare, followed by attendance at your birth to provide in-person support throughout labour.

During our meetings prior to the birth, I will get to know you and learn how to best support you. We will discuss any previous birth experiences and your wishes for the impending birth. You’ll learn about the physiology of birth and the hormones involved which help your mind and body prepare to birth your baby. We will also practice various comfort measures that can be used during labour, as well as discuss medical pain relief options. By the end of our sessions, you will have created a birth map outlining your informed decisions.

During labour, I will be on call and ready to support you.  I can attend your home during early labour, if required, and be with you at the hospital or other birthing location.  I will help you (and your partner if present) to work through non-medical pain relief techniques and comfort measures.  I will also be there to remind you of your birth map and the decisions you have made.

  • Two or three meetings prior to the birth in the comfort of your own home

  • Ongoing contact and support throughout your pregnancy

  • On-call from 38 weeks up until the birth

  • Continuous support during labour & birth

  • One postpartum visit, at home or the hospital & one visit to debrief your birth

  • Access to my library of books, articles and other helpful information
